What is Biodynamic CranioSacral ???

The Biodynamic CranioSacral therapy starts from the statement that the cerebrospinal fluid in the brain and the spinal cord moves in a rhythmic way and this rhythm spreads throughout the entire organism to provide it with essential impulses.

Therapists can feel this rhythm with their hands and thus apply soft impulses to the organism to enable it to find a new balance and restart its self-healing powers.

History and philosophy

Craniosacral therapy is rooted in osteopathy, founded in 1874 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917). Still was the first person to recognize the primordial importance of the brain, and more specific the cerebrospinal fluid, to the organism.

The latter is produced in the ventricles of the brain; it protects, feeds and cleans the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves. On top of that it also is an important vector for information.

Around 1900 Dr. William Garner Sutherland (1873-1954), a student of Dr. Still, becomes really aware of the rhythmic movements of the skull (Cranium). He can feel them in the brain, the meninges, the cerebrospinal fluid, in the spine and the sacrum. Because these movements are independent from the pulmonary breathing and the vascular system and because they play a central role, he qualifies them as primal breathing mechanism.

In the course of tens of years of study, Sutherland discovers a force that drives and sustains these involuntary, rhythmic movements of the primal breathing. He calls this power «Potency» and the responsible power « Breath of Life ». The impact of « Breath of Life » can be noticed in the primal breathing system.

A specific role is assigned to the fulcrums, energetic points of support around which the bodily processes organize themselves, but also to the Still points, in which the rhythmic movements of the craniosacral system subside.

At the end of the seventies, the American osteopath and researcher John Upledger (born in 1993) uses the term craniosacral therapy for the first time – this word is composed of « cranio » for cranium and « sacral » for sacrum. Dr. Upledger realises that the general public gets acquainted with this method.

Nowadays every rhythm and every movement of the craniosacral system has its own name, depending on the speed and quality; cranial rhythmic impulse (CRI), Mid TIDE, Potency TIDE, Long TIDE. These rhythmic movements can be sensed throughout the body. A free flow of the cerebrospinal fluid enables the nervous system, the muscles, the fascia, the organs, the bones and all the tissues of the human body to communicate in an optimal way. The different qualities of the cranial rhythmic impulse also provide us with information on the state of the organism on all levels, on tensions, functional disruptions and structural modification in the nervous system, the fascia, the tissues, the organs, the muscles and the bones.

THE BODY POSSESSES THE POWER TO TAKE CARE OF ITSELF

Live has mechanisms to sustain itself, to guard itself and also to repair itself. This fact is known since humans exist, but even now scientists are still not able to explain this capacity of the body to repair itself. Contrary to other medical or alternative approaches based on external intervention (drugs, surgery, manipulation) the Biodynamic CranioSacral therapy supports the body in its natural drive to express health and balance.

TODAY

Today, this application is very advanced in many countries, especially Anglo-Saxon countries, and it is spreading very fast in France, where it gains recognition among the public at large .

THE QUALITY OF BEING PRESENT AND CONSCIOUS TOUCH

Stress, traumas, emotional problems create imbalance in our body. They are causing symptoms that often only manifest years later. With a soft touch this imbalance can be sensed by an experienced therapist as areas of resistance, stagnations or limitations in tissue mobility. By his presence and the quality of his touch the experienced therapist stimulates the restoration of the rhythm and facilitates a return towards wellbeing and balance.

The conscious touch and the therapeutic presence enable the body to reconnect with the natural processes of self-healing.

Therapy – Effects – Procedure of the Biodynamic CranioSacral therapy

The Biodynamic CranioSacral therapy is done in individual sessions. At the beginning of the treatment the therapist holds a detailed inquiry on the condition of the client and informs the client about the therapeutic method and the progress of the treatment.

The client lies down on a massage table, wearing easy clothes. The work also can be done sitting down, standing up or in movement or lying on the ground (especially for kids).

By using palpations (soft contact) and thanks to listening to the rhythms of the craniosacral system the therapist evaluates and traces tensions in the connective tissues, organs, muscles and bones. With their hands, therapists can feel the subtle movements of the cerebrospinal fluid and its different qualities. With their attention and subtle impulses they support the self-healing process of their clients.

Obstructions and other blockages in the craniosacral system give clues to the therapist on the area where he/she has to put his/her hands. Thus, a kind of dialogue starts between the hands of the therapist and the body of the client.

If a fulcrum arises, the energy held within it can be liberated by using fine manual impulses and/or communication with the entire system. When this happens, the therapist can see how the organism organizes itself towards a new balance.

The nervous system and the entire body – from the bio-energetic field to the cells – but also the connections between the different levels of the body are involved. The therapy follows the goal of the organism to create a state of balance thanks to the self-healing power and the biological regulation mechanisms.

The sessions can be verbally assisted and supported. But anyway, very often there will be long periods of silence. The duration of a treatment depends on the client. Usually a treatment will last approximately one hour, often not that long for children and babies.

During the treatment reactions can occur on different conscious levels. For example, experiences or images from the past, thoughts, physical and/or sentimental feelings can arise to consciousness. The therapist facilitates these processes with words and mainly based on the sources, in other words he/she reinforces the healthy parts in the organism and the consciousness.

Between treatments and/or following the therapy, the therapist can give exercises, when needed, for the clients to do. This personal effort helps them to get a better perception of themselves, to take on their responsibility and it strengthens their notion about the processes of health.

Limits

The Biodynamic CranioSacral therapy cannot be used, or only with reservation, in situations where an elevated pressure in the skull has to be avoided, in cases of brain aneurysm, but also shortly after a skull or brain injury, a concussion or brain haemorrhage. During risk pregnancies, psychic illness or malignant tumours, craniosacral therapy can only be used with extreme caution or with the consent of other persons from the health care sector.

The Biodynamic CranioSacral therapy can be used for a large amount of symptoms, such as :

  • Problems of the nervous system
  • Sleeping
  • Psycho-emotional tensions
  • Anxiety
  • Depression, fatigue, stress
  • MSD (Musculoskeletal disorders)
  • PSR (Psychosocial risks)
  • Many pathologies
  • Consequences of shock or accident
  • Back pain
  • Physical pain
  • Migraine
  • Periods with changes in live
  • Digestive problems
  • Birth traumas
  • PMT (Premenstrual tensions)
  • Helps in reducing side effects of chemotherapy
  • Etc…
